The 32-year-old right-arm pacer Mohammed Shami has said that India National Cricket Team have been performing very well in 50-over cricket for a long period of time and he believes that people do not doubt the team’s ability.

Mohammed Shami delivered a Player of the Match performance in the second ODI of the three-match series against the New Zealand National Cricket Team at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur on Saturday, January 21. He finished his spell with the figures of 3/18 in the match and India won by 8 wickets with 179 balls remaining.

At the post-match press conference, Mohammed Shami was asked if he thinks India are better prepared in the bowling department for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

“I don’t think people have any doubts about the team’s ability. The team has delivered very good results in the last 4 to 6 years,” a slightly disappointed Shami replied.

He further said that the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, which is set to be held in India in October-November, is still far away and India can try out more players before finalising the squad for the marquee tournament.

“As for the World Cup, there is still time for it. We have many series to try out more players. It’s better to take it match by match,” he said.

Mohammed Shami was also asked what type of role he sees himself playing in 50-over cricket for India.

“I see myself doing the same role. Since the day I came in, I have been performing the same role. I try and ensure that I stay in the same role (laughs). I want to stay fit as much as I can and contribute to the team in the big ICC tournaments coming up,” he replied.

The second ODI of the three-match series between the Men In Blue and the Black Caps at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur was the first international match to be played at the venue. Talking about his playing experience, he said:

“I have played here before in the Ranji Trophy and in the IPL. Overall the wicket is good over here. It was a bit damp today. It was important for the team to start well. All the bowlers maintained a good line and length and the result is in front of you.”
