A pregnant woman was hospitalized and left fighting for her life after a teenager allegedly threw a rock at her. The incident occurred Tuesday in Perth, a city on the western coast of Australia.
The attack unfolded when a fight broke out between the occupants of a car and a group of people in the parking area of the Waterford Plaza shopping center in Karawara, shortly after 7 p.m. local time.
The altercation came to a head after a 17-year-old male allegedly threw a rock at the car, PerthNow reported. It went through the open front passenger window, striking the victim in the head. The 30-year-old woman was five months pregnant.
The impact of the throw was such that it immediately sent her into cardiac arrest.
“It will be alleged during the altercation, the 17-year-old male threw a rock at the vehicle, which went through the open front passenger-side window, hitting a 30-year-old pregnant woman in the head and causing her to go into cardiac arrest,” the police statement said, News.com.au reported.
Onlookers and police rushed to the woman’s aid and tried to give her CPR until the paramedics arrived on the scene. The victim was then rushed to the hospital where she remains in the ICU.
“The woman was five months pregnant, and we have some concerns for her safety and her baby’s safety,” Inspector Brett Baddock of the Cannington District Office said, 7News reported. Her baby continues to live, despite the woman’s critical condition.
“The parties were not known to each other. I put it down to quite simply (allegedly) senseless, unprovoked violence, which is unacceptable, and we won’t tolerate it,” Baddock said.
The assaulter, a Kensington resident, was charged with grievous bodily harm and breach of bail and was scheduled to appear in Perth’s Children’s Court on Wednesday. An investigation was initiated. In a similar incident from earlier this year, a pregnant woman pushing her toddlers in a pram was attacked by a teenage girl in Perth. The girl, 15, dragged the woman by her hair, and the pram carrying the toddlers fell to the ground, as seen in the footage of the vicious incident.
