The Texas GOP declared the results of the 2020 election that favored President Joe Biden illegitimate on Sunday.
About 5,000 Texas GOP Convention delegates “overwhelmingly” passed the resolution to call the 2020 presidential election results illegitimate. The resolution states that the Texas GOP believes the 2020 election violated Articles 1 and 2 of the U.S. Constitution.
“Various secretaries of state illegally circumvented their state legislatures in conducting their elections in multiple ways, including by allowing ballots to be received after November 3, 2020,” the resolution reads.
The Texas Republicans’ vote stems from “The Big Lie” promoted by former President Donald Trump, which are unproven allegations from far-right figures that widespread voter fraud and Democratic meddling stole the election from Trump.
These claims are the focus of public hearings held by the Select Committee to Investigate the Jan. 6, 2021 Attack on the U.S. Capitol. A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted recently found that about two thirds of Republicans believe “The Big Lie.”
According to Reuters, in a statement, the Texas GOP announced their rejection of the 2020 election by calling Biden the “acting President.”
“We hold that acting President Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. was not legitimately elected by the people of the United States,” the statement reads.
In a statement released on Monday, Texas GOP Chairman Matt Rinaldi said that the Texas party has “no faith” in the 2020 election results. He also said that they “don’t care how many times elites tell us we have to” believe the election was legitimate and pointed out that the party’s fundraising efforts focus on “election integrity.”
“We refuse to let Democrats rig the elections in 2022 or 2024,” Rinaldi added.
The White House has yet to comment on the news.
