9:30AM – RANKINE DEAL CENTRED AROUND PICK 5 LOOMS
Izak Rankine’s trade from Gold Coast to Adelaide reportedly isn’t far off in an exchange that is centred around the the Crows’ Pick 5, reports The Advertiser.
The report states that the two clubs have essentially locked in the deal on Wednesday night and that it’s expected to become official on Thursday.
Rankine officially requested a trade back to South Australia in late August to play forAdelaide on a reported five-year, $4 million deal.
It’s believed the Power were never in the race for the 22-year old, who grew up barracking for the Crows.
It comes after a career-best season from the former Pick 3, booting a personal best 29 goals from 16 games.
8:45AM – GIANTS FOOTY DIRECTOR COMMENTS ON NEW TRADE REPORTS
Giants football director Jimmy Bartel has left the door ajar for other stars to be traded if the club can’t strike a deal with Richmond for Jacob Hopper.
GWS is one of the busiest clubs this trade period, with Tim Taranto (to Richmond) and Bobby Hill (Collingwood) already departing the club, and Tanner Bruhn (Geelong) and Hopper set to follow amid salary cap pressure.
However talks between the Giants and Tigers for Hopper have stalled as GWS looks to be adequately compensated for the contracted star midfielder.
Reports then linked Nick Haynes and Lachie Whitfield, who are both on lucrative long-term deals, to moves as alternative options to clear cap space, and stated Toby Greene was “frustrated” with the Giants, but wasn’t seeking a trade.
Speaking on 3AW’s Sportsday, Bartel suggested the club was putting together contingency plans if Hopper stays.
“I understand people making those conclusions,” Bartel told 3AW’s Sportsday.
“The Hopper situation, if he goes in free agency (next year) the compensation pick will be pretty good as well and he’s still a very good player for the Giants if he’s playing there.
“There’s moving parts to this of course. Whether what Richmond is offering will satisfy (Giants list boss) Jason McCartney and (new coach) Adam Kingsley will want to have a say now that he’s rolling the sleeves up as senior coach.
“It’s the hypothetical game we do – if the Hopper deal doesn’t come off, what else could be done?”
Asked if it was possible that Greene could be dealt, Bartel bluntly responded: “No.”
6AM – GREENE ONE OF THREE GWS STARS IN SHOCK TRADE REPORTS
GWS superstar Toby Greene and teammates Lachie Whitfield and Nick Haynes have all been linked in surprising trade reports with a week to go in the exchange period.
Seven claimed a handful of rival clubs believed Greene had been left “frustrated” by the exits, looming or confirmed, of midfield mates Jacob Hopper and Tim Taranto to Richmond.
“Toby Greene’s name came up today, the star Giant. I think several clubs are of the view he’s a bit frustrated that Hopper and Taranto have both gone, or will go, to the Tigers,” Tom Browne said.
However Browne immediately followed that up with: “I’ve checked with sources directly aligned to Greene tonight, there’s no prospect of a trade, there’s no prospect of a trade for Greene this period.
“He’s got four years to run on a deal worth north of a million dollars a year, he’s also the Giants’ coveted co-captain.”
GWS’ loaded draft hand explained | 02:02
Meanwhile AFL Media reported the Giants are “open to conversations” on letting Lachie Whitfield and Nick Haynes leave the club.
The moves would be part of their ongoing attempts to clear their salary cap issues, which have been brought about by the huge deals for players like Green, Whitfield and Haynes, and the yearly introduction of highly-drafted prospects who need to be paid well once off their rookie contracts.
Whitfield is signed until the end of 2027 and Haynes is contracted for another two years on a backended deal.
It was reported earlier this year Greene, Whitfield, Stephen Coniglio and Josh Kelly “take up the best part” of $4 million of the Giants’ $13.5 million salary cap, while Haynes and a re-signed Hopper and Taranto would’ve taken that seven-player total to around $6.5 million.
SEN’s Sam Edmund reported on Wednesday on Trade Radio “in an ideal world, I think GWS would like to move Nick Haynes on as part of their reset”.
