The Knights are reportedly set to shift marquee man Kalyn Ponga into the halves in 2023 — which could see the Newcastle side make a big play for Manly’s Reuben Garrick.
According to The Daily Telegraph, coach Adam O’Brien is planning to shift Ponga to five-eighth hoping to get his hands on the ball more.
The 24-year-old is reportedly happy to play wherever benefits the team most, and Newcastle are desperate for a long-term halves partnership following Mitchell Pearce’s departure prior to the 2022 season.

Meanwhile, Garrick, who has a desire to remain at fullback, will be shifted back to the wing once superstar Tom Trbojevic returns from a shoulder injury.
The 25-year-old has been excellent for Des Hasler’s side since slotting into the No.1 jersey, earning lofty praise from teammates.
In Round 18 against the Knights, Garrick recorded two try assists, six tackle breaks and 217 running metres, with Jake Trbojevic labelling him “outstanding”.
“I want to give a wrap to Reuben Garrick, I think he has been outstanding in the last few weeks, the way he just wants the footy and competes on every play,” Trbojevic said.

Garrick’s is currently paid a winger’s wage, but with a permanent move to play fullback he could demand two times his current pay packet.
A shoulder injury has sidelined the reliable back for the remainder of 2022, and Garrick will be able to negotiate with rival clubs come November 1, coming off contract at the end of the 2023 season.
O’Brien may push for an early release to bolster his backline, but with Jason Saab’s recent ACL blow, Hasler may be reluctant to let wingers depart.
