Former President Donald Trump on Monday released a 12-page statement where he called the United States a “failing nation” following the House Select Committee’s second public hearing on the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot.
In a statement released through Trump’s Save America PAC, the former president accused Democrats of using the investigation to distract Americans from domestic issues. He also blamed Democrats for changing the narrative and added that they caused the “disaster” at the Capitol in 2021.
“Seventeen months after the events of January 6th, Democrats are unable to offer solutions,” Trump said, as reported by The Hill, which obtained a copy of the 12-page rebuttal.
“They are desperate to change the narrative of a failing nation, without even making mention of the havoc and death caused by the Radical Left just months earlier. Make no mistake, they control the government. They own this disaster. They are hoping that these hearings will somehow alter their failing prospects.”
In addition to blasting Democrats, Trump also promoted false claims asserting the 2020 election was stolen from him. In one section of the rebuttal, Trump referenced Dinesh D’Souza’s documentary “2000 Mules,” which alleged that thousands of people stuffed mail-in vote drop boxes with stacks of completed ballots. This claim was later dismissed by former Attorney General William Barr.
In another section of the statement, Trump claimed states like Michigan and Pennsylvania were part of an elaborate voter fraud scheme to ensure Joe Biden leads in those states, as evidenced by the additional time they took to count the ballots.
Former Fox News editor Chris Stirewalt dismissed the theory during his testimony on Monday. He argued that some states, including Pennsylvania, do not count early votes or mail-in ballots until Election Day, which would explain the additional time they take to finalize the results.
Trump’s 12-page statement came after the House Select Committee on Monday sought to establish that Trump still engaged in promoting false claims despite knowing he already lost the election to Biden. The panel released a series of footage featuring the testimonies of various former Trump aides and officials, several of whom said they told the former president that his claims of voter fraud were false.
The committee is expected to hold five more public hearings throughout the month. The third hearing is scheduled for Wednesday at 10 a.m. ET and is expected to focus on Trump’s role in the plans to overturn the election.
