As cases of monkeypox continue to spread globally, the U.S. has now reported 6,617 cases of the virus as of Wednesday, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Monkeypox has impacted a total of 87 countries since the latest outbreak was first detected in May in West and Central Africa, where it has largely been contained. The World Health Organization deemed it a global health emergency in July.
Governors of theee states – California, New York, and Illinois – have declared states of emergency in recent days regarding the monkey outbreak as cases there have reached 826, 1,666, and 547, respectively, as of Wednesday, according to the agency.
But these three states are not the only ones that have reported cases of the virus, which primarily affects men who have sexual contact with other men. The CDC said, monkeypox is spread through close, physical contact, respiratory secretions, and objects, fabrics, and surfaces that have been used by someone infected with the virus.
The CDC has been tracking cases of monkeypox by state, and notably, no cases have been reported in Montana and Wyoming. As of Wednesday, as reported by the agency, these are the number of cases of monkeypox that have been confirmed in each U.S. state and territory.

Symptoms of monkeypox can include fever, headache, muscle aches and backache, swollen lymph nodes, chills, exhaustion, sore throat, nasal congestion, or cough. A rash can also develop on or near the genitals or anus or on the hands, feet, chest, face, or mouth that may include scabs or look like pimples or blisters that can be painful or itchy.
To combat the spread of the virus in the U.S. the White House said it has distributed 1.1 million doses of the monkeypox vaccine across the nation and is conducting 80,000 tests per week to combat the outbreak.
