Wet weather is forecast for Sunday’s T20 World Cup final in Melbourne, but some forward thinking could save the tournament showpiece event.

Sunday’s forecast looks dire, with between 8-20mm of rain expected, according to the Bureau of Meteorology, along with the chance of a severe thunderstorm.

Fortunately there is a back-up date available should the match not go ahead, with Monday representing a reserve day.

Unfortunately Monday’s weather forecast is not flash either, with a 95 per cent chance of rain and 5-10mm expected.

Given the impending wet weather, which has already seen multiple matches abandoned in Melbourne, including the crunch Group 1 match between England and Australia, ICC tournament organisers are so intent on a result that they are looking to bend the rules to extend the allocated time to complete the match.

A minimum of 10 overs a side is needed to complete a final. Marvel Stadium, which has a roof and is within walking distance of the MCG, could not be considered for logistic reasons.

While Sunday’s match is due to start at 7pm AEDT, Monday’s reserve day would get underway at 3pm.

Usually there are strict rules in place that T20 games must be completed in rapid time, but tournament organisers are looking to extend that so a result can be possible.

At present the rule change has not been confirmed, but it is understood to be supported by the remaining sides.

Pakistan booked their place in the final on Wednesday night, as Babar Azam led his nation to a seven-wicket victory over New Zealand in Sydney.

They will face England, who played party poopers and spoiled the dream final involving India, thanks to a record-setting opening partnership from Jos Buttler and Alex Hales.

It is 30 years since Pakistan beat England in the ODI World Cup Final at the MCG.
