A 40-year-old woman in India died after she was administered an injection while she was in a hospital. The victim’s family alleged negligence and said the doctor was supposed to only give her a test dose.
The incident took place at Maternity and Child Care hospital in Srinagar, a city in the northern state of Jammu and Kashmir. Following the woman’s death, her family staged a protest outside the hospital. Authorities launched an investigation after a formal complaint was filed, the Dispatch reported.
The victim, identified as Shabnum Farooq, was admitted to the hospital for surgery. The nature of the surgery was not immediately known.
The family claimed they had informed the doctors that Farooq developed some reaction due to a test dose injection. However, despite the warning, the doctor gave her an injection following which she died.
“Giving the injection despite knowing about reaction is negligence and she died in no time,” one of the family members alleged.
Meanwhile, an official of the hospital told news agency KNO that the patient was just given a test dose.
“The injection is in vial and just a test dose was given and it happens in rarest of rare cases that patient collapses even after test dose and it seems the same has happened with this patient,” he said, adding that the test dose is given to see the reaction of the injection before administering the full dose on a patient.
“Soon after the test dose patient started vomiting and suddenly collapsed. We have started proper investigation in this regard. Whosoever will be found involved in any kind of negligence will be dealt with strictly as per law,” the hospital official continued.
In November last year, a 10-month-old baby died after receiving treatment for a cold and cough in an Indian hospital. The incident took place in the state of Chhattisgarh. The baby boy’s family reportedly accused the hospital staff and doctors of negligence. In another similar incident reported in the same month, a 29-year-old woman died in Telangana, another state in India, just hours after receiving an injection from a registered medical practitioner for the treatment of her cold and cough.
